Torrance, California Thrift Store Partially Run By Homeless Celebrates 2nd Year

Pix Exchange, a thrift store featuring both new and pre-owned merchandise run in part by formerly homeless individuals, is celebrating its 2nd anniversary with a day of festivities and steep discounts on Sunday, September 10 from 11 am – 4:30 pm at 1645 W. Sepulveda Blvd in Torrance. The event will include refreshments, music, decorations and a glamour-up contest whereby 3 attendees selected by drawing will participate in a 5 minute shopping spree to assemble the most sophisticated and fashionable look they can create using items found at the store. The three participants may keep their outfits following the event and the winner of the contest will receive a $100 gift certificate.

The event is intended as a win/win for attendees as the sale will include $2, $3 and $5 racks of clothes and other bargains for those looking for a deal.

PiX Exchange, which offers quality, fashionable garments and accessories as well as furnishings and other merchandise at affordable prices, was established by Holliday’s Helping Hands (HHH), a nonprofit that assists both homeless persons and young mothers recently released from penal institutions through housing and preparing them for lives of independence. Through PIX, HHH offers myriad training programs in which clients develop skills that will allow them to be self-supportive and functional in the job market. For instance, they may learn how to refurnish pre-owned merchandise so that it’s ready for the shelves or they may learn screen printing as the store boasts its own silk screening facility.

PiX Exchange offers a range of merchandise from scrubs (tops and bottoms), Polo shirts and uniform shorts and pants to home furnishings. In addition, it offers screen printing on-site.

HHH was founded by Miss Katina Holliday. The nonprofit has been recognized for its award-winning approach to serving it underprivileged clients and become a beacon for other such programs. Part of her strategy is helping clients develop “roadmaps” for their futures — detailed, comprehensive plans that help them hone their lifestyle skills, plan monthly budgets, job train, prepare for job interviews and become good neighbors and citizens.
